THE HILLS OF THE ITALIAN MARCHES – Le Marche to the locals – ripple between the Appennines and the Adriatic.

Much-touted as the new Tuscany, this largely untrodden area has some jewel-box towns and everything from mountain ski resorts to bronzing beaches – with barely an hour’s drive in between.   

Up in the Monte Sibillini nature reserve, you can even spot wolves, deer and eagles.
