BAUER CASA NOVA

Enticing Venetian home-from-home with five-star frills

AN OFFSHOOT of the famous Bauer Hotel, this restored 16th century mansion is only steps from Piazza San Marco. Traditional patterned walls in rich jewel colours, marble floors and bathrooms, heavy beamed ceilings and antiques create an enticing five-star Venetian home away from home.

With a kitchenette in all the suites and 24-hour room service from its illustrious neighbour next door, guests at the Bauer Casa Nova need never leave their room –  although it would be a shame to miss all the historic art treasures a stone’s throw away. Stay here and get the best of both worlds – the big sights of Venice are right on your doorstep.

Inter-connecting doors allow guests to occupy one unit or an entire floor, while the penthouse has a Venetian wooden roof terrace or altanatailor-made for midnight rambles or a glass of fizz before a night’s partying. Whip up a bowl of pasta in your suite, or head to the Bauer’s lavishly grand restaurant next door for the full works.

Dining in
Romantics will love the restaurant at the Bauer Hotel next door. Decorated with Venetian silk and gilded mirrors, it exudes opulence and old world charm. The menu doesn't disappoint either, and lobster pennette whipped with basil pesto sauce will whip your taste buds up a storm.

Dining out
You won't be short of choices in Venice, but you'll find it hard to beat Antico Martini near La Fenice. Not really dining, but you could follow tradition and sip a Bellini at much talked-about Harry's Bar...

What’s cooking?
The style is Mediterranean with international touches. We loved the spider-crab sausage with coral sauce and spring cabbage.

Dress the part
The Bauer is grandly elegant

Top table?
Those on the terrace are perfect for watching the gondoliers on the Grand  Canal.

See & Do
Where to begin? How about starting with Piazza San Marco, just around the corner.  Try and get there early in the morning – no tourists and no pigeons. Art lovers will enjoy the Accademia and Guggenheim museums while things don't get more romantic than a gondola ride for two. You'll pass under the Bridge of Sighs, where that other lover Casanova was imprisoned. Otherwise take your pick from the Doge's palace, the Rialto bridge, trips to Murano and Burano and a night at the opera.

Shop
Label lovers will find everything here from Gucci to Valentino with every other name in between (for shoes, try Bruno Magli). Traditional Venetian arts and crafts can be found in Alberto Valese (paper), Rubelli (silks) and Antichità e Oggetti d'Arte (interior decorators kill for the silks and velvets here).

Spa
You'll have full access to the menu of spa treatments at Bauer Palladio Hotel. Highlights include a Turkish hamman, Obermaier jacuzzi and the innovative Vitalis bath.

After dark
Get the Bauer's bartender to mix you some cocktails, take them on the terrace and watch the twinkly lights of Venice.
Suitably fortified, head into the alleys and enjoy getting lost in the maze, as well as in each other's company.

Dates
Late January-February
Venice Carnevale makes waves with masked balls, music and parties.
