Regal comforts just a stone's throw from royal Glamis castle
JUST DOWN THE ROAD from Glamis and its famous castle – one-time home of the Queen Mother – Castleton House offers regal comforts and a welcome to match. Owners David and Verity Webster have jazzed up this antique-strewn country house with flair and originality.
Friendly local staff are imbued with the infectious enthusiasm of the owners, and the place exudes a sense of cosseted good living and bonhomie. Rooms are tasteful to a T, and done out in impeccable country house style. There’s stylish decor, original art, jugs of fresh flowers and plenty of plump pillows. Thoughtful in-room extras include a flask of iced water, next day’s weather forecast and – lest you’re stumped for better ideas – bedtime stories.
Eclectic menus are sourced from the best home-grown produce, and guests dine in the strikingly done out conservatory or more traditional dining room. Lemon and Lime, two ginger Tamworth pigs (“they’re as friendly as Labradors,” promises David) rootle around in the orchard. Romance clearly blossoms here: David and Verity fell for each other and tied the knot themselves.

Dine on tender Scottish beef, west-coast salmon or Highland lamb. Work it off the next morning with a trip to Glamis Castle, a visit to Kirriemuir, home of Peter Pan author JM Barrie, or a stride around some of the other delights of Tayside and the rolling Angus countryside.

Dining in the Conservatory restaurant at Castleton House is both fun and relaxed. Chef Kevin MacGillivray serves contemporary Scottish cuisine with traditional French and Italian influences, making full use of locally sourced beef, salmon and produce. Menus change daily and big favourites include the braised featherblade with seared fillet of Angus beef.
Dining out
Have lunch in the Victorian kitchen restaurant at nearby Glamis Castle: treats on the menu include Arbroath smokie paté, Forfar bridies (minced beef encased in shortcrust pastry) and Dundee cake.
