HOTEL DE CHARME STELLA MARIS
Characterful little place at the gates of Cinque Terre
RIGHT AT THE GATES of the fabulous Cinque Terre region – 18 km of near-vertical cliffs, vineyards and terraces – you'll find this little place minutes from Levanto's sandy beach.
Hotel de Charme Stella Maris is tucked away on the first floor of a pinky-brown former palazzo dating back to 1850, with newer rooms in a nearby house sharing its amenities. Owned and managed by Renza Pagnini, it has a pleasing warmth.
In fact there’s every excuse for lying in bed at Stella Maris: frescoed angels, cherubs, knights on white steeds and nymphs are depicted amid clouds and spirals of gold on the ceilings of the older rooms. Throw in antiques, ornately carved walnut wood and mahogany furniture, crystal chandeliers and gilded mirrors, and this little two-star hotel is packed with period feel. Shower rooms are small and simple, but everything's there.

Hit the Spot
In lively Levanto, on the Ligurian coast.
Bedtime
Lie back and think of cherubs– classic frescoes adorn the ceilings.
Be Savvy
Parking is limited – late arrivals may need to use the seafront carpark. Motorini may disturb light sleepers.
Be Smitten
Stellar two-star choice in a lively resort.
Flower filled garden
Stella Maris is not a place for those who love the sleek and modern – furnishings are the real period-piece McCoy. Junior suites (rooms 5 and 7) are the biggest and best, while room 4 is charming.
Breakfast is served in the primrose-walled dining room. Dinner is also served here in season, and house specialities include hand-made pasta, frittata and fresh local seafood. The bar is well stocked with coffee and drinks and you can take an aperitivo, as well as a traditional local dinner, down to the elegant, flower-filled garden, shaded by tall palms. Outside, it's all action – Levanto sparkles with life through the summer season, with watersports galore.
