LES MUSCADINS
Hillside charmer in medieval Mougins
IT'S A PLEASURE to exit the autoroute and climb the 260 metres into Mougins, a medieval hilltop village perched among olive, cypress and pine forests. And a double treat to find Les Muscadins: a small boutique property that's pretty enough to paint (as Picasso did) and has attracted a colony of artists and artisans.
Flowers grow here in profusion. And there are sights, too: take in the panorama of the Bay of Cannes, Grasse and the Préalpes. If this isn’t enough, guests at Les Muscadins also have access to the luxurious Le Mas Candille, with its Shiseido Spa, a couple of minutes away.
Rooms – some with balconies – are large, light and airy. Each has personalised decor and colours mirroring the sunny surroundings. Some look across to the Med, others over village streets. Our favourites include the larger balconied suites with the big cushiony beds and colourful tiled floors, and the smaller rooms done out in peachy sunshine shades with wrought iron beds.

Hit the Spot
At the foot of medieval Mougins, overlooking the Bay of Cannes.
Bedtime
Slumber among the peachy sunshine shades of the Med. The best rooms have spacious balconies.
Be Savvy
There are plenty of stairs to climb – and no lifts.
Be Smitten
A slice of magic in Mougins.
Sybaritic spa
Breakfast at les Muscadins is served both in the restaurant and on the terrace overlooking Cannes. There is a bar for drinks, and classy cuisine on a flowery terrace. Dinner is served in the luminous restaurant where the chef harnesses the season’s best ingredients in imaginative ways. There’s more gastronomy at nearby Restaurant Candille or the poolside La Pergola. Decisions, decisions.
Indulge yourselves around the two outdoor pools and jacuzzis, or become sybarites at the fabulous Shiseido Spa (Europe’s first), all at the nearby Mas Candille. Just hop on board the free transfer.
You're in reach of the Riviera here, yet away from the big-city bustle of Cannes and Nice. The village itself is a charmer, with pretty doorways, tubs of flowers and winding alleys. Head off from here deep into the Provence countryside or take the coastal road down to the glam Côte d’Azur. Life’s tough.

Dining in
Run by chef Tony Ribrioux, the hotel's Bellavista restaurant is more Italian than French: menus major on pizzas, pastas, salads and fish dishes using seasonal and local ingredients. Basket weave chairs lend a nicely rustic tone, and there are spectacular views over the Bay of Cannes from the terrace. The risotto aux asperges is a speciality to be tried.
Dining out
The old village of Mougins boasts more than ten restaurants. You can try all the local cuisine you could possibly want as well as a few very elegant restaurants within a two-minute walk.

Where?
Bellavista at Les Muscadins
What’s cooking?
Italian food with French style
Dress the part
Go casual and chill
Top table?
Sit on the terrace for terrific views over the Bay of Cannes
See & Do
Start with a stroll through the old local village of Mougins, a medieval gem. Ancient winding streets wind around in circles, and no flower-filled window or doorway looks quite the same as the last. Plenty of painters live in the village, and you'll see their work exhibited at numerous little galleries. Grasse, the world perfume capital, is only a short drive away and the Riviera is at your feet.
Shop
Snap up a piece of local art from one of the town's many galleries, browse for provençal dried flowers and herbs or pick up some pottery to take home. For a city fix, Cannes has all the designer-name stores you could want.
Spa
You're free to use the gorgeous Spa Shiseido at sister hotel Le Mas Candille, 800m away. An array of treatments available includes massage, hot-towel oshiboris and manicures. Have a sauna and swim while you're there.
After dark
Cannes is the place for nightlife. Hit the roulette and blackjack tables at one of the big casinos (the Casino Croisette is as glittering as you'd expect) or flirt with your heartthrob at one of the hip late-night bars like Le Cat-Corner.
Dates
May
Rub shoulders with the big stars and wannabees at the Cannes film festival.
September
Find your sea legs (and perhaps a yacht-owning millionaire) at the Cannes international boat festival.
