LINTHWAITE HOUSE
Ralph Lauren meets Raffles at a stylish lakeside address
THIS EDWARDIAN HILLTOP HOTEL is one to wax lyrical over, with its poetic views over Lake Windermere and just about every lofty peak in the Lake District.
The interiors of lovely Linthwaite House have been stylishly done up by Amanda Rosa (of Malmaison fame), so don’t expect acres of frou-frou and frills. The traditional Edwardian framework has been zooted up with a contemporary palette of colours and fabrics.
There are antiques and bare wooden floors, kilims, leather trunk coffee tables and colonial rattan chairs. It all marries together beautifully. Indeed, the clockwork running of Linthwaite House, its unstuffy atmosphere and those lush 14-acre gardens make it perfect for tying the knot – or popping the question.
Polished wood floors, tall vases of lilies, a montage of mirrors and beautifully framed photographs set the tone in the two adjacent dining rooms. Mirrors reflect flickering candlelight at night, and chef Simon Bolsover’s cooking is well worth reflecting on – he’s won plaudits from food critics galore.

Hit the Spot
On the scenic shores of Lake Windermere.
Bedtime
Honeymooners make a beeline for the Garden suite, overlooking the gardens and croquet lawn.
Be Savvy
Skip the Windermere weekend crowds by going off-season.
Be Smitten
Luxe on the lushest lakefront.
Private tarn
Excellent daily-changing menus might feature seared scallops, Goosenargh duck breast or wicked chocolate fondant. Lake and mountain vistas adds an extra dimension to dining, and you can also
picnic (or indeed fish for brown trout) by the hotel's private and peaceful tarn.
Proposals are rife at Linthwaite House, and helpful staff will even pop champers and strawberries into the private summerhouse ready for the big moment on request. Lovers tend to make a beeline for the Garden suite, with its lush setting and pamper-grade bathroom, though Room 29 is a hard-to-beat signature setting. Needless to say, it pays to go deluxe here and have the lake views and largest beds.

Both offer great views of the grounds, and well spaced tables add privacy. Leave room for the tarte tatin with apple crumble icecream.
