LOCANDA DEL GALLO

Terrific little hideaway in the Umbrian hills

WINDING OUR WAY through the Umbrian hills, we spied Locanda del Gallo from afar, nuzzled among trees and gazing out at a show-stopping vista of woods and valleys. Miles from the madding crowd, it’s just the place to recharge and refresh.

Owner Paola Moro has teamed the original 17th century farmhouse’s rustic rafters and stone walls with Balinese teak furniture, carved wooden masks, art and oriental artefacts to beguiling effect. And that’s not all that makes Locanda del Gallo (which means The Rooster Inn) a cracking overnight country roost.

Cockerels are everywhere – over 400 of them. Made from glass, wood and brightly painted ceramic, they perch on shelves, swing from mobiles and crow from picture frames. What with warm provençal walls, comfy four-poster beds and deep baths, the result is guaranteed to make you feel sunny side up. It's all done with great style.

Bali meets Provence

Utterly peaceful gardens dotted with sunloungers, a stunning shady verandah, an astonishingly beautiful pool terrace, and delicious organic fare (everything from the bread to the yoghurt is made here) make Locanda del Gallo an ideal spot to revitalise jaded souls. There’s even a little chapel in the grounds should you want to give thanks.

Bedrooms here are fetchingly rustic: Balinese teak furniture is mixed with warm Mediterranean colours and shades of rural Italy. Artworks and knick-knacks from Paola's oriental travels are scattered throughout the house.

Chef Jimmy is a whizz at rustling up anything from tagliatelle al pesto to a fiery Indonesian stir-fry, conjuring up a different fixed menu nightly. Walk off your feast by walking – there are trails galore nearby – swimming, or booking a massage or yoga session.

Dining in
Dine on Mediterranean dishes largely produced with organic ingredients. Dinner is served in the garden during summer, so you can soak up those amazing far-flung vistas.

Dining out
Sigillo Fossato di Vico and Gualdo Tadino – both in the town of Gubbio – come highly recommended. However it's quite a drive back on rural roads, so you'll probably want to eat in.
