OLD RECTORY COUNTRY HOUSE
Elegant country house with Conwy estuary vistas
THE WELSH MOTTO of this elegant Georgian country house painted in springtime daffodil yellow is Hardd Hafan Hedd, meaning beautiful haven of peace. It’s soon apparent why: The Old Rectory harks back to an altogether less hurried and calmer world.
Hosts Wendy and Michael Vaughan more than deserve their accolade for Welsh Hospitality at its Best. Sympathetically restored in a charming but unfussy style, this relaxing house is a pleasure to stay in. Watercolours, antiques, porcelain and a drawing room piano underline the sense of comfort, while thoroughly inviting bedrooms have lavishly draped four-poster or half-tester beds, cushiony sofas, well appointed bathrooms and goodies such as fresh fruit.
Outside, terraced gardens tumble onto lawns stretching towards the water, with wide-open views of floodlit Conwy Castle and the River Conwy estuary. Snowdonia and the rugged Welsh coastline await discovery nearby.

Hit the Spot
Overlooking the scenic Conwy estuary.
Bedtime
Ask for the Mahogany room with its views of Conwy Castle and big corner bath for two.
Be Savvy
Be carbon-friendly: take the train to Llandudno Junction (3 hours from London) and hire wheels there.
Be Smitten
Georgian gem in a corner of Welsh Wales.
Historic Conwy
Breakfasts here (the real McCoy) are good and traditional. While dinners are no longer offered, your hosts are happy to recommend good places in the locality. Historic Conwy Castle and Snowdonia National Park await exploration nearby, together with Conwy’s bird sanctuary and golfing.
