THE TOWN HOUSE

Chic townhouse B&B in the heart of Marbella’s old town

MINUTES FROM THE BEACH and the boardwalk that leads out to Puerto Banus, The Town House sits on a pretty cobbled square in Marbella’s old town. Close to Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), this quarter of old Andalucia with its fountain and orange blossom seems a million miles from the city’s glitzy palm-lined avenues and marble pavements.

The Town House feels rather like an airy private home, with a bar near the entrance and a roof terrace four floors above where you can sip a glass of vino and take in views of La Concha mountain. The serene atmosphere is conducive to spending lazy siesta hours sprawled on the rooftop’s ivory cushions with a cooling drink, or pouring yourself a nightcap (it’s an honesty bar) while waiting for the stars to come out. It’s hard to believe you’re in the middle of town here.

Al nine rooms are chic and individually decorated, mixing contemporary design with well-chosen retro pieces. Creamy-white walls and paintwork, crisp cotton sheets and clutter-free furnishings lend a timeless feel, while well appointed bathrooms shine. Cool floors and beamed or sloping ceilings complete the picture. One room has a four-poster and a more colonial air.

Hit the spot
On a shady square in Marbella’s Andalucian old town.

Bedtime
We liked Room 8, with its roomy bathroom and round window.

Be savvy
Rooms are not huge, but the place feels light and airy. Beds are doubles, with two quilts.

Be smitten
Tranquil townhouse just off Marbella’s Golden Mile.

Sociable breakfasts

Breakfast is served in the little downstairs bar (a good time to meet some of your fellow guests) and there are plenty of good restaurants in the vicinity. The Townhouse’s friendly staff enjoy looking after their guests, and are happy to make recommendations.

From here you’ll enjoy strolling through the cobbled streets and little squares of the old town, with its bijou shops, bistros and tapas bars. You’re just a short stroll from the beach and Marbella’s many glam beach clubs.

Dining in
Have a late breakfast and sip your coffee on the suntrap roof terrace with views of Mount La Concha, or in the downstairs lounge/bar.

Dining out
Marbella boasts restaurants by the score. Bambina in the old town is a great lounge bar with funky lighting and murals, serving creative Euro-Spanish cuisine. Lonestar Brasserie’s name might  imply huge Texan steaks, but instead you get modern Mediterranean in a cool setting in exclusive Puerto Banus.

Glamorous Marbella has plenty of designer label stores, not to mention upmarket galleries selling ceramics and contemporary artworks. Snap up pottery and leather goods at the weekend Nueva Andalucia flea market. The Town House itself sells a selection of home accessories – including some of the pictures, candles and ceramics adorning the rooms.

Marbella has dozens of bars, clubs and late-late discos. Favourites include chic La Notte, sporting a Moroccan theme.
