You’re in prime position here to watch all the town’s river life, breakfasting on the broad, flower-decked balcony with the tang of sea salt in the air. Inside, things are just as appealing: walk through Oscar's gated courtyard, with its bursts of white roses, and make yourself at home in the drawing room's deep armchairs (where an open fire crackles in winter) with its prints, rugs and boardgames.

Up past the grand staircase, rooms are attractively furnished with generous ensuites, kingsize beds, pretty fabrics and nautical prints. All have stunning views of the marina. Stroll past the crayfish nets of Fisherman’s Wharf to Griffiths Island, with its lighthouse and colonies of mutton birds, or take a heritage walk around Victoria’s oldest fishing port, with its many historic buildings. Port Fairy is also known for its great beaches, lively music scene and great restaurants.

Brekkie at Oscars is an out-and-out treat: de-lish house specialities include fresh berry hotcakes and tomato bruschetta with basil butter. Work it off with a swim and surf on the beach, a round of  golf on the town’s 18-hole course or a breezy ride along the Great Ocean Road.
