PRAGUE – WHY GO?
Spires, squares and statues help make Prague a stunner. The Czech capital is not surprisingly a magnet for culture-hungry tourists (not to mention the weekend party crowd), and savvy city lovers come here out of season or in winter (when snow and crisp blue skies set everything off a treat) to see it at its best.
MUST SEE, MUST DO
Charles Bridge
You can’t beat a sunset stroll across the iconic Charles Bridge – one of Eastern Europe’s landmark sights – lined with its brooding statues in the evening light with the city skyline behind.
Old Town Square
This former market place is Prague’s historic centrepiece. Crowds gather to watch the 15th century astronomical clock strike the hour, when figurines of Christ and the 12 Apostles pop in and out. You can also climb the old town hall tower for an unbeatable view of Prague's rooftops.
Mala Strana
Take in the winding cobbled streets and baroque buildings of Mala Strana (the “Lesser Quarter”) for a taste of quintessential Prague.
The Jewish quarter
This historic quarter (one-time home to author Franz Kafka) surrounds the evocative old Jewish cemetery. A jumble of crooked headstones and the adjacent museum are poignant reminders of the city’s religious past.
Prague Castle
Prague’s ninth century hilltop castle – fetchingly lit up at night – is home to the royal palace and St Vitus’s cathedral, with its gargoyles and towers.
Music and opera
Do go to a classical concert in Prague (they are held at a number of beautiful churches), or take in a performance at the Opera House.
After dark
There are plenty of cosy bars and cellars in the old town, though for night views of the city the Hilton’s ninth floor Cloud 9 bar is worth a peek. Make time for a local Czech beer – best enjoyed in one of the city’s convivial beer gardens.
