LE ROYAL RIVIERA
A-listers' address in pristine Riviera settingTHIS SWISH HOTEL perches on the peninsular of exclusive Cap Ferrat.
Uninterrupted views of the Med, a pristine beachfront, landscaped gardens, orange groves and mountains come as standard. But don’t expect the predictable Belle Epoque look here; recent renovations have given Le Royal Riviera contemporary appeal without ditching the building’s inherent grandeur.
Cool, muted colours make an immediate design statement, while furniture and objets d’art are brought together in imaginative ways; be it ethnic, colonial, or in the case of the Grand Salon, neo-Hellenistic. The look is testament to the talents of hotel guru Grace Leo-Andrieu, and the result is a slice of
metropolitan chic in an unmistakably southern landscape.
Rooms at Le Royal Riviera are
spacious and come with all the high-tech gadgetry. Walls come in deep shades of aubergine and saffron, matched with deep sofas and leather-studded bedsteads. We liked the provençal-style rooms of L’Orangerie, a villa with direct access to both pool and beach, with its light colour-washed walls and blond wood furnishings.
Hit the Spot
In posh Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat – mind the Ferraris.
Bedtime
Rooms in the Orangerie have a lighter provençal touch, with colour-washed walls and blond wood.
Be Savvy
Light sleeper? Avoid front rooms near the railway track.
Be Smitten
Feel mega-rich in a millionaire's playground.
Seafood platters
Royal Riviera diners are well catered for here. Share a
fresh seafood platter on the terrace of the Panorama restaurant with its knockout views of the Med; lounge poolside in the Pergola on hot summer days for perfectly chilled cocktails and something lightly grilled; or nibble late-night snacks in the striking Cap Bar with its oversized armchairs.
It’s a leisurely
15-minute stroll into the resort of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat – that’s if you’re not playing tennis, golf or the roulette wheel (to cover your stay with the winnings, perhaps?). Ditch the limo and take a walk to the gorgeous setting of nearby Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild – one of the area's must-sees.

Dining in
The hotel's Le Panorama restaurant is headed by chef Bruno Le Bolch, serving delicious Mediterranean cuisine with a contemporary twist in elegant surroundings. Tuck into
Brittany lobster salad with green asparagus flavoured with Thai basil and served in aspic, or
roast fillet of turbot with asparagus tips, baby broad beans, black olive tapenade and aged balsamic vinegar.
Dining out
There are some great restaurants in the vicinity. L’Oursin Bleu is popular for its great position overlooking the water and locally sourced food, while Les Agaves – only five minutes away – is a relaxed and stylish bistro known for its great cuisine. The scallops here always go down well.

See & Do
Take the circular road around Cap Ferrat for a glimpse of some of the palatial villas dotting this particular Millionaire's Row. Arguably the most stunning is the candy-pink and white Musée Ephrussi de Rothschild, a residence built by the wealthy Rothschild heiress at the turn of the last century. It's packed with over 5,000 pieces of art and is set in lovely Italianate gardens.
Private yachts have long replaced the fishing boats lining the little port of Saint Jean, but you can see glistening fresh fish for sale at the morning fish market in nearby Beaulieu sur Mer – a great place to banter with the locals. The Greek Villa Kerylos is also well worth seeing here. The Riviera's social hotspot, Monaco, is also within easy reach.
Shop
Window shop in shamelessly monied Monaco – even if the lap-of-luxury goods on display are not for you, there are plenty of little souvenir shops to browse in. There's also a boutique at Le Royal Riviera where you can pick up swimwear and sunglasses.
Spa
Book a massage at the hotel's Wellness centre – it offers a range of body toning and pampering treatments using Ayurvedic products. There's a gym to work out in and a sauna if you want to turn up the heat.
After dark
Zip into Monaco for the night of your life with discos, bars and late-late-night casinos. Or head for the big casino at Beaulieu sur Mer, with its gaming rooms and glitzy cabaret shows.
