VILLA MANGIACANE
Dreamy Renaissance hideaway with distant Florence viewsGLASS OF WINE IN HAND, stand in the magnificent arched loggia and gaze out over a private Tuscan vineyard to the distant Florence skyline. Welcome to Villa Mangiacane, once home of the powerful Macchiavelli family and
now a sybaritic retreat that mixes Renaissance frescoes and modern art with some decadent Italian living.
Wander through Villa Mangiacane's ground floor salons, library and wine cellar;
stretch out on a boldly striped sofa on the loggia; sip a prosecco in the sculpture garden; doze over a book beside the pool. Bedrooms – none less than a suite – have a restrained opulence with crisp, clean colours, generous fabrics, rugs on polished floors and breathtaking views.
Grand antiques – perhaps a carved four-poster or an elegant chaise longue – mix with contemporary artworks. Bathrooms are cool, marbled and sleek with a hint of cool Art Deco. At night, after dining in the chandeliered and mirrored dining room, you’ll be drawn to the frescoed loggia –
perfumed with flowers and lit with soft candles – and the dreamy views of distant Florence. Just the two of you and the twinkling Tuscan hills.

Where? Villa Mangiacane
What’s cooking? There's an emphasis on local produce in dishes such as roast beef pantanese served with virgin olive oil mashed potatoes.
Dress the part Evenings here are undeniably chic
Top table? As close as you can get to those Florentine views
See & Do If the body beautiful is your prime concern, there's mountain biking and a fitness centre here. A trip into Renaissance Florence and its feast of galleries, churches and museums is surely a must, as is a tour of local vineyards and wine cellars. Hot-air balloon trips over the Tuscan landcape are also easily arranged. If you can't tear yourself away from the haven of the hotel, that's fine too.
Spa The Taj Mahal comes to Tuscany in Villa Mangiacane's brand new Nadushka spa, with its exotic Asian-inspired decor. Soothe body and soul with holistic beauty products made from local ingredients, have one of the many pampering massages on offer or turn up the heat in the sauna and steam room.
Diary Dates 2 July and 16 August Enjoy the thrills (and many) spills of Siena’s world famous Palio horse races.
Easter Sunday More thrills, and a big explosion at Florence’s Scoppio del Carro. This is where a dove-shaped rocket is fired from the cathedral to blow up a flower-filled cart in the square, much to the delight of spectators.
