LOCANDA SAN VEROLO
Alluring 17th century farmhouse close to Lake GardaHIDDEN BEHIND A TINY HAMLET in a cluster of old stone houses, you could slip past this farmhouse and scarcely know it. But step through the gateway of Locanda San Verolo and you’re in for a real treat.
Ten minutes from the shores of Lake Garda, this handsome, blue-shuttered building has been converted into a luxury inn with rooms. If you want Lake Garda's holiday playground on your doorstep but without the bustle and buzz, this is the place for you.
Huge care has been taken to keep Locanda San Verolo's 16th and 17th century features – polished floor tiles, dark beams, rough plaster walls – and seamlessly blend them with a classically understated style. Thoughtful touches at this luxury locanda include fat white candles and elegant writing desks.
Hit the Spot
Near the village of Costermano, close to Lake Garda.
Pillow Talk
The bedroom under the eaves with the roll-top bathtub was our favourite.
Be Savvy
Use satnav or take directions – it's in a teeny hamlet.
Be Smitten
A rare find you'll want to keep to yourselves.
Dine under the awnings San Verolo's creamy walls, flowing curtains and soft rugs mix with
boldly striped sofas and hand-painted furniture to create a rich but relaxing atmosphere, while the parasoled terrace outside is made for alfresco dining. Vast and indulgent bathrooms – just the place for a lingering soak with a glass of prosecco – are expensively clad in russet-coloured
rosso di Verona marble.
Our room had a big clawfoot bath centre stage in the upstairs bathroom, plus a huge walk-in drench shower. Another has a big corner jacuzzi bath, and some have a
collage of Victorian sepia pin-ups on the wall. Everything is impeccably kept and the tranquillity is conducive to simply winding down.
Dine under the awnings here on
inventive and stylish cooking with excellent Franciacorte wines. Lounge on the tree-cloaked private beach at sister property San Vigilio on Lake Garda (guests receive free passes), or take the cable car up Monte Baldo.
Lie back on a white-cushioned sunlounger by the pool and dip in and out of Lake Garda's lively towns and nightlife as you will – San Verolo gives you the best of both worlds.

Dining in Expect excellent local and seasonal cuisine at Locanda San Verolo, with fresh-caught fish from the lakes. We loved the
Garda sardines with pine nuts, sultanas and shallots and steak with rocket and Parmesan, while the
“stelloni” filled with Taleggio chese and Baldo truffle are de-lish. More-ish desserts include tiramisu and home made pastries.
Breakfast Buffet breakfast is served until 10:45am. Expect fresh seasonal fruit and Italian hams, salamis and cheeses.

See & Do Explore Lake Garda by boat by simply hopping aboard one of the ferries that chugs between the little ports. Outdoor pursuits are plentiful with horse riding, walking and cycling, not to mention sailing and windsurfing. You can always sunbathe on the beach at Punta San Vigilio (San Verolo’s nearby sister hotel), then do some serious imbibing with a tour of the wine cellars in Valpolicella and Soave.
