Check out the historic hilltop towns of Assisi, Cortona, Spoleto and Orvieto, with their wealth of medieval churches and artworks. Smaller Bevagna and Montefalco are also well worth exploring. Less well known local beauty spots include the Marmore Waterfalls and Lake Trasimeno.

It’s a great place for food and wine lovers (Italians say the food gets better the further south you go) and you’ll enjoy visits (and tastings) at the many local wineries. True foodies can enrol on a Genius Loci cookery class and take some recipes back home.
