Corral del Rey - Review
This sleekly transformed 17th century palacio – bought as a ruin by the owners – is now an intimate boutique hideaway with just six rooms and lashings of style. Original Roman marble columns in the atrium style lobby lead the eye up to galleries with wrought iron balustrades, and a glass roof that brings the sunlight streaming in.
Bedrooms at Corral del Rey are a fusion of rustic Spanish and clean-lined contemporary, accented with vintage pieces. Beamed ceilings, tall shuttered windows, palest ochre walls, limed oak floors, classic tapestries and an eclectic mix of furniture set the mood. Beds are dressed in coolest cotton while knockout travertine stone bathrooms come with walk-in rainfall showers and sleek chrome fittings. Junior suites have huge marble bathtubs too.
Rooftop plunge pool
It’s not just Corral del Rey's look that seduces the senses – every detail has been carefully thought out, from the springy mattresses to the plasma screen TV with surround sound to the iPods and DVD player, free wi-fi, whisper-quiet aircon, and Lutron controlled mood lighting. Aged beams and wonderful old Moorish shutters contrast beautifully with tactile fabrics and rough textured walls.
Stone stairs lead up to the roof terrace, with its leafy plants, sunloungers and small plunge pool for cooling off, not to mention stunning views of the cathedral. We soaked up the last rays of the sun here with a chilled bottle of rosé, watching the sky turn orange behind the silhouetted city rooftops. It was just as exhilarating first thing next morning as we tucked into oven-fresh croissants and fresh brewed coffee in streaming sunshine.
Downstairs there’s a restaurant and bar with stripey banquette-style seating and smart glass tables – a swish setting for breakfast or supper. Contemporary artworks hung around the property are for sale – so you can always bring a little piece of this intimate Seville hideaway back home. Seville's awesome cathedral and the city’s Gothic glories are just steps away.
