Dating back to 1672 and beautifully restored by Californian owner and art collector David Stein, this peaceful mountain finca is a luxurious five-star haven set in the Tramuntana mountains above the unspoilt village of Puigpunyent. We loved it from the word go.

Son Net’s stone flagged floors, rustic beams, wood shuttered windows and antiques have all the feel of an aristocratic Mallorcan country estate. Walls are scattered with the works of Warhol, Hockney and Chagall, while the stunning 100-foot infinity pool boasts valley-wide views. There’s even a private chapel here.

Grandeur and glam

Son Net’s regal proportions, lofty ceilings and huge fireplaces mix grandeur with glam, while blissfully comfortable bedrooms retain a sense of intimacy. The celebrity guest list includes Catherine Zeta-Jones and husband Michael Douglas, Lauren Bacall and King Juan Carlos.

Individually decorated rooms and suites are tasteful to a T. We loved the top floor Deluxe rooms, with their beamed ceilings and valley views. Grand suites entice with tall shuttered windows, fabulous views and wonderfully indulgent bathrooms. One even has a telescope for stargazing.

Huge Deluxe Pool rooms go one better, with four poster beds, huge and luxurious marble bathrooms, split-level private gardens perfect for an intimate breakfast, and outdoor hot tubs. Honeymoon heaven.

While away an afternoon sipping cocktails by the pool from the shade of your cabana (as we did). Nibble at some tapas on one of the tempting terraces. Have an after-dark soak in your private outdoor hot tub and take in the mountain vistas. Decisions, decisions!

Set around centuries-old olive press, Son Net’s Oleum restaurant offers top Mallorcan cuisine in a sophisticated setting. There’s a chic bar for cocktails, and a Gazebo grill for summertime al fresco lunches. Faultless but unstuffy service from long serving staff runs like a well-oiled machine.

Should you want to stir from your sunbed, there’s golfing close by, beaches within a short drive and all the attractions of Palma just 15 minutes away.
