Rooms are smart and sophisticated (the best have seven-foot beds), with a palette of red and white and plenty of blond wood. Vi-sprung mattresses with Egyptian cotton bedding and velvet throws, flat screen TVs with masses of channels (including Playboy) and DVD players, plus individual air con, White Company toiletries, waffle robes, slippers (to keep), wi-fi, tea/coffee tray. Around half the rooms have free standing bathtubs.

Dining in
The Restaurant at Drakes offers modern European dining in sleek surrounds, with a keen focus on local and seasonal produce. The menu changes regularly but you can expect to sample dishes such as assiette of suckling pig with celeraic puree, langoustine risotto with wild asparagus, and lavender pannacotta with blueberries.
Breakfast
Breakfast (charged extra) is served until 10am. Choices include soft boiled eggs with Marmite soldiers or Scotch porridge with an optional shot of Drambuie. You can also start the day with some Buck's Fizz or champers.

There’s stacks to do in Brighton. Admire the exuberant Victoriana of Brighton Pavilion, eat fish and chips on the pebbly beach, trawl for antiques in The Lanes or spend an hour with the sea breeze in your hair on Brighton Pier, where you'll find everything from hot dogs to dodgem rides and a helter-skelter. You can admire the marine life at the Sea Life Centre, or head to Brighton Race Course, which holds 23 meetings a year.
