WHITE HOUSE MANOR PRESTBURY

A luxurious haven within striking distance of Manchester

OWNERS Ryland and Judith Wakeham have infused this Cheshire Georgian manor house in the village of Prestbury (top of the county's des-res enclaves) with lashings of enviable style. Eleven brilliantly conceived bedrooms in the heart of upmarket Cheshire's Golden Triangle let guests choose from the sensuous to the traditional, and the flamboyant to the downright decadent.

Feeling naughty? There’s the Crystal room, with its stunning chandelier, whirlpool bath, Monsoon power shower and tile TV, whose four-poster is trimmed in icicle glass beads. Opulent Aphrodite (aptly named after the goddess of love) is a real lovers’ lair, while Campion boasts a four-poster swathed in chiffon.

Regal cerise and gold taffetas are the theme of Minerva, while Earl Gray is done out in Wedgwood china-plate blues. The Millennium room has a huge glass bed and wicked Turkish steam room – a 21st century harem for two.  The Coach House meanwhile – all muted browns and sultry golds – has a state-of-the art bathroom and its own private entrance.

Private sanctuaries

Individual pieces of art, furniture and collectibles have been chosen with consummate care to create sumptuous private sanctuaries perfect for putting up the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign.

While there's no in-house restaurant, there are plenty of good places to eat within a few minutes' walk in the village of Prestbury.

Dining in
Only breakfast is served, but there are some great restaurants nearby – both in the village and within a short drive.

Breakfast
Breakfast (not included in room rates) is worth getting up for. The full English includes BBC award-winning bacon, and sausages sourced from Moorland Smokehouse in Wilmslow. There's also a Healthy option with a platter of fresh fruits, Greek yoghurt and honey.

See & Do
Live out your own period drama at Chatsworth, the country house pile of Mr Darcy in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice, or visit the awesome  stately homes at Lyme Park and Tatton Park. Alternatively chill out at nearby Tytherington leisure club, where guests get discounted entry to use the golf course, Olympic-sized pool and gym. If you’d rather watch then do, take a tour of Old Trafford’s football and cricket ground in Manchester, 15 minutes away by train. There are many golf courses in the area and you can be barefooting it along a Welsh beach after an hour’s drive.

Summer
Make a day of it at the Chester Races – there are meetings through the summer.

August
Enjoy the Gayfest at Manchester’s Mardi Gras, complete with a pink picnic and parade.
