Castle House
HIDDEN AWAY BEHIND Hereford cathedral, Castle House Hotel sits in a pretty backwater overlooking the old castle moat. This elegant Georgian townhouse has all the feel of a country house – right in the middle of town.
Moments from the city’s squares and sights, Castle House boasts a plum position that’s both close to the action and tucked away from the hustle-bustle. Softly lit at night, this former bishop’s residence glows warmly at the end of a quiet residential street.
Once past the pillared entrance, you’ll find a wide foyer with sweeping staircase, a wood panelled bar and a light-filled restaurant whose French doors open onto the terrace and waterside gardens – just the place for pre-dinner drinks (or even dinner) in summer. With birdsong and quacking ducks, you could be in some rural idyll.
Tapestried bedroom
Comfortable and immaculate rooms – all individually styled – please with glossy, classic furniture, swagged curtains, plush rugs and big beds. All are named after famous former locals like Nell Gwynne and David Garrick. Smart bathrooms come with everything you need including plenty of fluffy towels and robes – and there’s even a pack of takeaway shower goodies to take back home. Suites have sofas or a sitting area, with a second TV to watch in bed.
Favourites include the William & Mary suite, with its views over the moat, and the nicely contemporary Nell Gwynne. Four-poster fans can pick the Royal suite, while newly-wed favourites include the sprawling Charles ll suite, which boasts a tapestried bedroom and sitting room with fireplace. We also loved the new Ballingham suite, with French doors opening onto the garden.
Chef Claire Nicholls creates delicious dishes in the Castle House restaurant – Herefordshire’s only three-rosette restaurant. For lighter fare, there’s a separate bar menu featuring light bites and bistro-style suppers. The restaurant works closely with local food producers, with much of the meat coming from the owner’s own farm.
There’s well polished service from obliging and friendly staff, free valet parking and a complimentary decanter of sherry in your room – just the ticket to get your stay off to a great start.
