Intimate tables provide a fetching setting for a dinner à deux, and diners can tuck into fresh-landed lobster, crab, scallops and langoustines, prime Scotch beef and season’s game. There’s a remarkable wine list that won’t break the bank, and a toasty fireplace where you can sink a warming Highland malt to start things off.

Menus are modern, mouthwatering and based around ingredients from local artisan suppliers. Chef-patron Geoffrey's seasonally inspired dishes include warm salad of wood pigeon with black olives and herbs, slow braised daube of beef and ocean-fresh Shetland salmon served with gnocchi.

Peaceful suites at this outstanding restaurant with rooms – each with its own lounge, marble bathroom and quality aromatics – overlook rustic gardens, while good solid walls ensure total privacy.

Fife’s pretty fishing villages and coastal walks are close at hand, as are castles and National Trust gardens. And golfers are a mere strike from St Andrews’ hallowed turf.
