An out-and-out Yorkshire Dales delight

HOW DID this creeper-clad Georgian country house set in the prettiest Yorkshire Dales village get its name? Apparently, Austwick Traddock derives from the trade that used to flourish in the paddock overlooked by the hotel grounds in the village of Austwick – hence Traddock.

Now you know. But its distinctive name is not the only thing that makes characterful Austwick Traddock stand out from the crowd. Sofas made for sinking into and crackling fires lend its antique-furnished interior a welcoming warmth, making it a favourite with locals, walkers and those touring the Dales. Individually decorated bedrooms are stylishly done out with all the home-from-home touches you could want – not to mention bucolic views of the landscape.

Be sure to bring a hearty appetite to dinner – this is an ace award-winning kitchen, and dishes major on using season’s best local – and organic – ingredients. Outside, the air is fresh enough to bottle, so you’ll want to hit those walking trails or take to the outdoor terrace in summer.

'Twixt Brontë and Herriot country

This is the place for fresh air fans who adore their home comforts. We loved the shameless decadence of the spacious and secluded Gordale room – huge swagged curtains, a clawfoot bath yards from the bed, decor in shades of gold and cream, and double-aspect views towards the Bowland Fells.

It's assumed you'll be eating in here unless you tell your hosts otherwise at breakfast. Blackboard menus – and you can consider your options while toasting your toes by the log fire – feature new takes on old favourites. Try a Dales fillet steak with dauphinoise potato, caramelised banana shallots and Madeira sauce, followed by rhubarb compote with crumble and bay leaf custard.

Going for walks hereabouts is a must. You’re on the doorstep of Brontë and Herriot country, and spectacular walking trails start right from the village. Feeling lazy? Let the scenery come to you with a ride on the famous Settle to Carlisle railway a few miles away.

MIDWEEK BREAKS AT AUSTWICK TRADDOCK

Dining in
The  candlelit Traddock serves modern British cuisine, offering a choice of  three or four choices per course. You might find lobster tortellini or pan fried hand dived scallops on the menu, roasted guinea fowl and – a house favourite – yummy hot Green& Blacks chocolate fondant.

Breakfast
Full breakfast is served until 10am weekdays and 10.30am at weekends. If you fancy something lighter, tuck into smoked salmon with scrambled egg on toast or oaty porridge served with cream and brown sugar.
